Ingredients:

  • 1 cup split yellow moong dal
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Fresh cilantro, choppe

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the split yellow moong dal and soak it in water for 30 minutes. Drain the water and set aside.
  2. In a large pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds and cook for 1-2 minutes until they start to pop.
  3. Add chopped onion, minced garlic, and grated ginger to the pot and sauté for 5-6 minutes until the onions become translucent.
  4. Add turmeric powder, salt, and the soaked moong dal to the pot and stir well.
  5. Add 3 cups of water to the pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cover the pot. Simmer for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the dal is fully cooked and has a creamy consistency.
  6. Add lemon juice and fresh cilantro to the dal and stir well.
  7. Serve hot with rice or bread.
